Pulling Plastic

Single-Use Plastic Bags, Twine, Iron | 2021

Single-use plastic bags are a massive problem when it comes to today’s environmental issues. Prompted with accumulating 100 or more of the same material that communicates a specific concept, I knew I wanted to take a stab at the topic of environmentalism and plastic pollution today. Relating my idea to the prompt, plastic pollution is abundant and we needed at least 100 of our chosen items. I used plastic bags that were heated together to create textiles squares that I could then work with to make these four parachutes. The bib around my neck is connected to the bags by braided bags, referencing the tight-knit they have in our world today. Since they are connected, moving while wearing this sculpture will choke the person wearing it, physically referencing the hurt these bags cause, and the drag they have on humans’ chance to progress into a greener future.
